Previous Cases & Notes
Compare to reports from That's Illegal on Trello.
To Player Ben when they discover the notes:
Before you lost your memories, you discovered something the records never formally captured: Maryn’bl is not operating on a scale of good versus evil. She is operating on Balance. The interventions you tracked — the sealed rifts, the unbound demons, the lifted curses — are not heroics, and they are not cover-ups. They are deliberate corrections. She does not take payment because payment would turn restitution into transaction. What she is doing is atonement by choice — not because she is compelled, hunted, or commanded, but because she believes weight must be counterweighted. Where she once contributed to instability, she now absorbs it. Where she once bent contracts, she now unbinds them. You, before the loss, realized that your enforcement preserved order through punishment, while she preserved it through repair. That recognition is what unsettled you — and what drew you toward her.
What you should gain from this now is clarity, not leverage. Maryn’bl is not your quarry, and she was never your adversary. She is an ally to Zigga, and by extension to those who escaped — though the circumstances of that escape remain obscured to you. Your role in Maryn’bl’s life was shifting before everything fractured: you were moving from auditor to witness. You saw that her work was not concealment but correction, and that her alignment with greater powers — including the one she studies in secret — is not worship in the simple sense, but inquiry into forces that disturb equilibrium. Knowing this places you at a crossroads. You can resume the posture of suspicion, or you can choose to become what you almost were: someone who understands her methods, respects her chosen atonement, and stands beside her not as an investigator of wrongdoing, but as a guardian of the Balance she is trying to restore.
Kayne's own hand written notes in this private binder were his own, never meant to be submited. This conclusion is meant to summarize what you will now read from "your own hand"
This is where it becomes human.
Not mythic.
Not planar.
Not divine.
Just a lawful man alone in his apartment with papers he never meant to be found.
Previous Cases (closed) on MZ (Maryn'bl Zagnibs)
When Kayne searches his own case history under: Maryn’bl Zagnibs
Aliases flagged: Zaga, Z., MZ-7 (informal)
He discovers something unsettling:
He has been assigned to her file nine times in two years.
Only the first was random.
The rest? Requested by him, Kayne himself.
Some were justified through procedural language:
“Follow-up irregularity.”
“Pattern continuation.”
“Unresolved anomaly cluster.”
“Repeated proximity to planar disturbances.”
But the system marks them subtly with : Investigator preference override invoked.
He kept pulling her file. And the ledger shows something else.
Every case:
Closed without charges.
No violations sustained.
No binding contracts violated.
No actionable wrongdoing.
But there are notes.
The Cases
None prove guilt.
All show interference.
But the interference trends… are interesting…
Case 1: The Bent Prism Incident
Two years ago
A hedge wizard in Lower Ward accidentally inverted a minor conjuration sigil, creating a planar feedback loop.
Potential escalation: catastrophic.
Maryn’bl was recorded entering the alley.
Witnesses report:
“She stared at him really hard and said some words I don’t' understand so I can't repeat them.”
“Then the air folded back in.”
“Then she left without collecting payment.”
Kayne flagged on record: “Unauthorized planar interference. Note: Use of Chronomancy is suspected to be interference with the Fortune's Wheel. Records indicate she “works” there.”
But the post-incident arcane survey concluded and over-written by “the director”:
“The collapse prevented three extraplanar bleed-through events. Director AP V”
In summary: She saved lives. She never billed.
Case 2: The Thrice-Cursed Archivist
A minor functionary at the Hall of Records was hexed three separate times by rival spellcasters.
Maryn’bl appears on surveillance.
Spends six hours inside.
Leaves visibly exhausted.
Result:
Hex removed.
Curses redirected safely.
No collateral.
Kayne’s note at the time recorded in the file: “Possible illicit curse manipulation.”
But the victim filed a statement:
“She didn’t even tell me her name. Just said, ‘Stop signing things you don’t understand.’ What a rude rose”
Case 3: The Whispering Tear
A micro-rift to Pandemonium formed in a disused cellar.
Maryn’bl entered alone.
No city authorization.
No backup.
No report filed.
When inspectors arrived later:
Rift sealed.
Sound dampened.
Residual madness contained.
Kayne filed: “Repeated presence at unauthorized arcane incidents.”
But no harm was traced to her. Only stabilization. Case closed, again.
Case 4: The Demon of Five Strings
A minor fiend bound into a bard’s instrument began feeding on despair.
Maryn’bl confronted the bard publicly.
Witness accounts:
“Her stare was furious.”
“Said something about consent and contracts.”
“Snapped her fingers and the thing screamed.” Kayne’s own witness statement…
However it concludes:
Demon _un_bound.
No fatalities.
No public charge.
Kayne noted a few weeks later for the records, but was not the investor on this case but rather an important witness:
Illegal demonology suspected but uncertain. No cause for continued investigation at this time.
Truth he knows from this report details: The demon’s binding circle -wherever it was- had been drawn by the bard, not her. She corrected it and ALL the witnesses knew this to be the case. She showed up to remove and stop the spread. Old-Kayne at this point had evidence first had that she is not what she looks like. He was there first hand, and he knew this case very well. He was there. He could have been affected by it…
Case 5: Kerberous Shadowdusk Investigation
This is where it shifts. Kayne was assigned this case and accepted. One month ago.
Kerberous Shadowdusk was a real concern.
Connections to shadow-trade.
Questionable uses of illicit drugs.
Kayne was officially assigned by his father. This time, though, after years? Maryn’bl shut it the fuck down.
Hard.
She cited the following claims against Kayne:
Procedural overreach.
Improper surveillance.
Misapplication of authority.
It was the first time she had fought him in any way.
… Interesting though that Maryn’bl’s official report against Kayne Vlapith demanded permanent restriction from Kerberos rather than her, however… And he realized something when his father set a permanent restriction on him from ever being assigned to Kerberos Shadowdusk… Kayne wasn’t hunting a criminal. He was looking for justification to be curious.
It wasn’t procedural anymore. It was personal to him somehow.
Perhaps she is just that confident. Or is it something else?
Most recent case?
Strangely you had dreams leading up to what was called "the Month of Death" .
Personal Notebooks (in Apartment by Kayne himself)
The Private Case Notes (Unfiled – Kept in His Desk Drawer)
- They’re not official parchment.
- They’re thinner.
- Personal stock.
- Margins filled.
- The handwriting is tighter than his formal reports — less performative, more analytical.
At the top of the first stack:
M.Z. – Pattern Study (Personal Reference – Do Not Archive)
He only does this when a case bothers him.
There are similar folders for exactly three other subjects in his life.
Hers is the thickest.
Page 1 – Bent Prism Incident
She arrived before response time average.
How?
Does she track disturbances? If so, how?
Underlined:
She did not capitalize on wizard’s vulnerability.
Circled twice:
No payment accepted.
A side margin note:
Why intervene if not gaining leverage?
Then lower, almost annoyed ink pressure:
Unless intervention itself is the goal.
Page 3 – Hex Contagion
He has drawn a small flow diagram.
Curse threads.
Bindings.
Transfer arcs.
At the bottom:
She knows contract law. Not surface-level. Structural.
And then:
Her corrections are clean. Too clean for improvisation.
Then something personal:
She doesn’t humiliate the afflicted. She scolds them, yes. But privately.
He underlined privately.
Page 7 – Demon of Five Strings
This page is smudged.
He’s rewritten one sentence twice.
She dismantled the binding without asserting dominance over the fiend. She dismantled the binding but didn't assert dominance over the it..
He’s written beneath it:
That is restraint.
Then, smaller:
Why is she more careful with demons than most magistrates are with people?
Page 10 – Pattern Overlay
A crude map.
Red marks for planar disruptions.
Blue marks where she was present.
The red ones shrink near blue.
He’s written:
When she is near, damage reduces.
And beneath that:
This is not opportunistic proximity.
Then, after a pause in the ink flow:
This is maintenance.
He draws a line between two incidents and writes:
She absorbs civic entropy.
And then, smaller:
Why would a fiend choose that?
Final Unfiled Page
The handwriting shifts.
Less investigative.
More defensive.
I am not obsessed.
This is due diligence.
Below that:
Frequency of review justified by anomaly recurrence.
Then scratched out:
Frequency of review justified by personal irritation.
Then, in smaller, almost embarrassed script:
Frequency of review justified by… curiosity.
There are tally marks in the margin:
XXXXVII
Most Recent Previous Audits/Cases:
This summary is generated from That’s Illegal!, currently in the possession of Subject: Kayne (Designation: Civic Planar Auditor, Status: Active/Reinstated). The following log details the last twelve months of resolved casework performed by the Handler prior to the most recent "Buffer Reset".
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
ANNUAL AUDIT SUMMARY: HANDLER KAYNE (VALTHIS, K.)
JURISDICTION: Sigil / Outlands (Gatetown Circuit) REPORTING PERIOD: Last 365 Solar Cycles (Standard) ACTIVE CASES: None (0) RESOLVED CASES: 7+
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
CASE REF: OUT-GAT-7714 (Automata Boundary Check)
Subject: Gatehouse Council (Automata).
Allegation: Dispute regarding the legal boundary where the Outlands ends and the Lawful Substrate of Mechanus begins.

Audit Note: Handler Kayne successfully re-plotted the coordinates using a Concordance Engine Fragment. Both parties signed the agreement, and a celebratory drink (Milk-based) was logged but not officially witnessed.
CASE REF: SIG-MKT-0882 (Fortune’s Wheel Revenue Review)
Subject: Shemeshka the Marauder [Audit Report: SIG-ACT-000-SHEMESHKA].
Allegation: Statistical anomalies in probability distribution within the counting rooms of Fortune's Wheel [Report-previous].
Resolution: CLOSED / JURISDICTIONAL DEFERRAL.
Audit Note: Discrepancies were determined to be within the tolerances of "Standard Market Variance." The House successfully argued that luck is a local commodity and not subject to Mechanus Axiomatic Equilibrium [Audit Report: SIG-LOC-WHEEL-77].
CASE REF: SIG-CLK-1014 (The Zagnibs-Shadowdusk Inquiry)
Subjects: Maryn'bl Zagnibs [Fiend-class, Resident] and Kerberos Shadowdusk.
Allegation: Reported metaphysical instability and "temporal fraying" within the subjects' shared professional/domestic radius.
Resolution: CLOSED / NO IRREGULARITIES FOUND.
Audit Note: REDACTED. No occult violations were logged.
CASE REF: ACH-REC-4410 (Acheron Asset Requisition)
Subject: Unidentified Hobgoblin Legionnaire.
Allegation: Improper storage of "Recursive War-Assets" within the Market Ward.
Resolution: CLOSED / SETTLED BY COMPLIANCE.
Audit Note: The subjects provided the necessary Acheron Registry documents for their equipment. Handler Kayne confirmed that while the equipment was "existentially loud," it did not violate the Neutrality Accords of Sigil.
ASE REF: SIG-POR-0312 (Unregistered Portal Transit)
Subject: Displaced Prime Material Humanoids.
Allegation: Unauthorized usage of a fluctuating portal behind the Bottle & Jug.
Resolution: CLOSED / EXILE PROTOCOL.
Audit Note: Portal was determined to be a "Glitch Event" and was subsequently collapsed. Subjects were reclassified as "Clueless" and reassigned to the Bleak Cabal for psychological intake.
CASE REF: MECH-MOD-0091 (Modron Compliance Audit)
Subject: Monodrone Unit 11-B.
Allegation: Unit was observed performing a "clockwise rotation" that deviated by 0.04 degrees from standard protocol.
Resolution: CLOSED / REPAIR AUTHORIZED.
Audit Note: Unit was retrieved and returned to Mechanus for recalibration. The error was logged as a minor environmental interference caused by Sigil’s local magnetic "noise".
CASE REF: SIG-BNK-9902 (Fated Debt-Note Dispute)
Subject: Anonymous Taker (Fated Faction).
Allegation: Falsification of an interplanar letter of credit involving the Hall of Coin.
Resolution: CLOSED / ASSET SEIZURE.
Audit Note: The document was proven to be a forgery. The Fated claimant attempted to argue that "holding it makes it real," but the Axiomatic Index in Kayne's possession provided a non-negotiable rebuttal. Asset was seized by the Bank.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
ADMINISTRATIVE ANNOTATIONS (TO THE HANDLER): Handler Kayne: Your history suggests a high proficiency in identifying "Razorvine Instability" over actual crimes. This is a statistically safe way to maintain your status.. Your record is currently clean. Ensure your new "Clueless" incarnation does not begin filing reports on your own amnesia; that would be a recursive violation of privacy law..
