Endless Wars

In the shifting reality of the Fortune’s Favored campaign, the multiverse is not merely a place of adventure; it is a complex machine currently undergoing a catastrophic failure of its "Endless" logic. To navigate this, players must understand the three cannon meta-wars currently grinding against one another: BloodTime, and Chaos.

Click on each page link below to learn more about its relevance to FF in more detail.

I. The Three Meta-Wars

1. The Blood War (The War of Attrition)

The Blood War is the eternal, cosmic struggle between the Lawful Evil baatezu (devils) and the Chaotic Evil tanar’ri (demons). While historically viewed as a self-sustaining stalemate, our campaign has introduced a dangerous variable: What happens when the Endless War of the Shattered Compact actually ends? Surely a rumor would spread, "An endless war has ended!"

This "Resolution" sets a multiversal precedent that threatens the logical necessity of the Blood War itself, potentially triggering a systemic "shutdown order" from Mechanus that would leave millions of fiends unbound and looking for new victims.

2. The Time War (The War of Syntax)

This is a clandestine war for control over narrative causality and memory. The primary actors are the illithid god Ilsensine, who uses "non-Euclidean cognition" to hide temporal manipulations, and the Gith resistance, who use rrakkma bands to sever these tendrils.

Overseeing this is the Masked Court, the "Paradox Engine" that governs the margins of fate to prevent impossible futures from collapsing the Great Wheel. [custom]

3. The War of Chaos (The War of Fracture)

This war is defined by the Wheel’s Malfunction and the resulting Data Drift. It is a war of identity versus record, where "Statistical Impossibilities" (the PCs) fight to exist in a system that tries to recycle them. This conflict manifests as Gate-town drift, where the belief of residents causes entire cities to slide into neighboring planes.

II. The Gods of the Outlands & Sigil

In this setting, the Norse and Egyptian pantheons provide the legal and spiritual frameworks that allow "Glitched" souls to claim sovereignty.

  • The Norse (Ysgard): Focus on continuation through conflict. Gods like Odin and Tyr (and the monks of the Last Tankard) teach that survival is not success—continuation is.
  • The Egyptian (The Bone Throne): Focus on transition and witnessAnubis is the First Listener who weighs the soul after the story, while Hathor provides the "Willing Milk Rite," a legal mechanism that voids ownership over any being that chooses its own sustenance. Thoth acts as the antagonistic "Editor" who wants every story archived and finished, often clashing with the Masked Court's desire for "Unwritten" endings.

III. PC Connections: Backgrounds & War Ties

Gauthak Gathakanathai (The Asset)

  • Background: A goliath soul from Ysgard, "soul-stuffed" into an infernal-modron frame to serve as K-7//GATH-RUK, a "Line Anchor" in Acheron.
  • Connections: He is a former tool of the Blood War and a target of the Iron Pursuit. His tie to Hathor through the Udder Ring provides the legal means to reject his Acheronian manufacture in Courts.

Grisland Goldfeast (The Witness)

  • Background: A Ysgardian celestial and monk of the Last Tankard Tradition who descended to witness those denied honorable deaths.
  • Connections: He is the "Clarity Engine" for the Time War. As a "descended vow" from Mount Celestia, he is the only being whose integrated discipline can stabilize the War of Chaos during this incarnation by defeating the Pale Devourer

Kayne Vlathis (The Auditor)

  • Background: A Civic Planar Auditor from Mechanus whose mother was the "Last Listener" of the Bone Throne.
  • Connections: He is the pivot point of the Time War; his father, Director Valthis, holds the "Record," while his mother represents the "Witness". He must choose whether to use Mechanus Law to recognize his allies' identity (written) or follow his instincts to liberate them (unwritten).

Farryn (The Harmonic Actor)

  • Background: An unknowingly "ripening" powerhouse
  • Connections: She is the primary target of the War of Chaos. Her ripening (knowing) attracts the Pale Devourer, a "Predatory Principle" that seeks to finalize all unauthorized timelines.

Zigga (The Variable)

  • Background: An Arane Rogue who, she slipped into a "liminal strand" during a prior cycle failure.
  • Connections: She is the "Uncounted Step" in the War of Chaos. Because modrons and deterministic systems literally fail to count her, she acts as cosmic camouflage, allowing the party to move through the Time War without being filed or "redacted".

Maryn’bl / Zaga (The Axis)

  • Background: A Knowledge Cleric of Boccob
  • Connections: She is the architect of war and the unaligned arts. She bridges all three wars, using the "By All Means" tome to legally sabotage the Blood War while protecting the party from the Time War's editors.
