  • Madame Cindervane: A mortal woman known as a "Luck Launderer" who is one of the few individuals capable of saying "no" to Shemeshka. Rumored to be connected to an abyssal merchant lord.

About

The Merkhant sect is a powerful, secretive organization of planar entrepreneurs who believe that "jink is the answer to everything". Operating primarily out of The Lady’s Ward in Sigil, they specialize in the acquisition of wealth, property, and influence through subtle machinations rather than open conflict. While many planar factions focus on belief, the Merkants view the multiverse as a transactional chessboard where power is measured in liquidity and controlled instability.

Shemeshka’s Role: The Arbitration Queen

Shemeshka the Marauder, an arcanaloth known as the "King of the Cross-Trade," serves as the de facto leader and primary broker of the Merkhant Guild. Her role within the guild is defined by:

  • Monetized Uncertainty: She utilizes the Wheel of Tyche (the relic within Fortune’s Wheel) to introduce "volatility into inevitability," allowing her to profit from "non-finality futures" and "delayed outcomes".
  • Data Brokerage: She treats the multiversal glitch as a highly profitable systemic failure, using hijacked modrons like R04M as a "Living Ledger Cache" to hide illegal war-contracts and yugoloth accounting abstractions from official Sigil archives.
  • Strategic Consolidation: Shemeshka aims to restructure Sigil’s trade to move it away from faction oversight, effectively privatizing portal tariffs and turning planar uncertainty into shipping insurance booms.

Notable Merkants and Powerful Traders

Based on your records, the following individuals are members of the Merkhant Guild or influential brokers operating within its orbit (cannon):

  • Shemeshka the Marauder: The guild’s leader and "portfolio manager of catastrophe".
  • Zadara: A wealthy titan and secret member of the Merkhant sect who funds various researchers, such as Lissandra the Gate-seeker, to gain leverage against Shemeshka.
  • Estavan: An ogre mage and merchant lord of the Planar Trade Consortium; though he is a professional rival to Shemeshka, he often facilitates the transport of goods for other Merkants.
  • Ramander the Wise: A wizard known as the "Master of Portals" whose job is essentially portal extortion, a business in which Shemeshka holds a substantial cut of the profits.
  • Ik’phus: A nycaloth at the Hall of Property Records who handles "sticky property disputes" in the Hive for the Fated.
  • Harys Hatchis: A wizardly "crier of commerce" and pitchman whose promotional fliers and campaigns drive much of the Market Ward’s activity.
  • The Five Star Guild: A council of entrepreneurs and innovators from the gate-town of Tradegate who maintain the town’s status as a mercantile powerhouse.

Enemies or Exiles

  • A’kin the Friendly Fiend: A high-level arcanaloth who was ousted from the Merkhant Guild for being "too kind" and now takes delight in fouling up Shemeshka’s schemes.
  • Duke Rowan Darkwood: Though he is the Factol of the Fated, he is described as "shorting" the Shattered Compact by buying futures in Acheronian instability, making him a major investment rival to Shemeshka.
  • Old Grin, host unknown to most

Old Grin was served shortly before the start of Session 1...
