Nullifier

Axiom Nullifier

Kayne’s "recollection" of the Axiom Nullifier is not a traditional memory, but rather a systematic resonance triggered by his training and his unique relationship with multiversal law. Because the multiversal glitch stripped Kayne of his personal identity but left his professional functions intact, he recognizes the device through the bureaucratic habits of his body and the reactive prompts of his tome, That’s Illegal!. When Kayne encounters information regarding the device, his tome may flip to relevant but incomplete statutes, identifying the Nullifier as a "Prototype Reset Instrument" associated with Case Engine fragments he once managed.

Retrieving the Nullifier from A.P. Valthis

The party has a compelling need to retrieve the Axiom Nullifier from Kayne’s father, Director A.P. Valthis, the Director of Irregular Continuities and Lost Units in Mechanus. Persuading him is a high-stakes challenge for several reasons:

  • Stabilizing Modron Madness: The Outlands are currently plagued by modron drift and madness, where units like R04M (Delta-Nine) are leaking causality distortions. The Nullifier is the primary tool capable of stabilizing this corruption without destroying the modron.
  • The Auditor’s Standing: Valthis is exceptionally rigid and currently views Kayne and the party as "Class-IV Irregularities" or "unresolved processes". Retrieving the tool requires persuading him that the party is a necessary "corrective force" rather than an anomaly to be quarantined.
  • Gauthak’s Stabilization: The device is essential for managing the volatile Mechanical Core embedded in Gauthak’s chest, which has begun to flare with "Engine Stress" due to its corrupted Acheronian frequency.

Functions of the Axiom Nullifier

The Axiom Nullifier is a sophisticated, rod-like device composed of interlocking rings etched with moving equations. Its core functions include:

  • Combat Capabilities: In battle, it serves as a +1 mace or rod that deals force damage specifically to constructs.
  • Directive Override: The Nullifier's primary special action allows a user to target a modron that has been weakened (reduced to 25% HP or less). If the modron fails a Charisma saving throw, it is incapacitated, its corruption is stabilized, and it enters "Standby Compliance Mode".
  • Data Extraction and Return: Once a modron is stabilised, the party can extract its designation and information, or use the device to facilitate the unit's return to Mechanus via a portal.
  • Gauthak’s Stress Management: When activated near Gauthak, the Nullifier causes his internal Stress Points to manifest as floating metallic sigils. It can be used once per long rest to reduce his Stress by 2 and temporarily prevent him from triggering his dangerous "War Self Mode". Hopefully.
  • The Ledger Connection: If the party does not already possess the Modron Ledger of Deviations, the first modron stabilised by the Nullifier can upload its data directly into the device to project the initial ledger.
