Tome of Continuance
"Wait, That's Illegal!"
At first glance, the tome looks less like a book and more like a contained mechanism pretending to be one.It is heavy—unreasonably so for its size—and bound in layered plates of darkened brass and iron, each panel etched with fine geometric filigree that almost—but not quite—aligns. The edges are reinforced with articulated hinges and clasps, as if the book expects to be handled improperly and has prepared accordingly.
The front cover is dominated by a circular mechanical dial, set into the metal like the face of a clock that refuses to tell time. Concentric rings of engraved symbols, tick marks, and tiny inset lenses rotate slightly when the book is opened or closed—never enough to be obvious, but never perfectly still either. A faint, warm glow pulses behind one of the smaller apertures, like a heartbeat trying to pass as a calibration light.
Small levers, pins, and recessed switches line the spine and corners. None are labeled. Some look functional. Some look decorative. None of them invite trust.
The pages themselves are thick, uneven, and overstuffed—like the book has been forced to contain more than it was designed to hold. Colored tabs, slips of parchment, and thin metal bookmarks protrude at irregular intervals, each marking sections that don’t seem to stay in the same place twice. When flipped, the pages make a soft, layered sound—not quite paper, not quite parchment—like something between a ledger and a filing system.
The spine flexes reluctantly, as if the book would prefer to remain closed unless there is a valid reason to open it.
When held, the tome feels… aware of orientation. It subtly shifts its internal weight depending on how it’s carried, settling into the hands like it is adjusting to proper handling procedure.
There is no visible title on the cover.
But when you look at it long enough—just long enough—you are certain it reads: “Wait, That’s Illegal.” At least it did... These days: “That Shouldn’t Work… But It Does.”
True Name: Tome of Continuance
ð Level 3: Version I — “Wait, That’s Illegal!”
A rigid, iron-bound tome stamped with the sigil of Mechanus. Its pages are filled with citations, case law, and recorded infractions. Recently, new ink has begun appearing between the lines—handwriting that is not yours… but responds to you.
ð Subtle Sensory Details
- The metal is always slightly warm, regardless of environment
- The dial ticks occasionally—but never at a consistent interval
- Tabs rearrange themselves when the book is left unattended
- If opened without purpose, the pages feel… resistant
ð§ What This Implies (Without Saying It)
- This is not just a book—it’s a device for processing reality
- It expects structure, but is currently under strain
- It is already… adjusting
This book was designed to:
- Record violations
- Preserve truth
- Assign responsibility
ð Hidden Truth, Becoming Clearer: The book is no longer just recording. It's just trying to keep up.
But something has changed. The tome has begun adjusting its function to maintain “coherence.” You are:
"Above the expected operational threshold" (Level 6+) notes started to appear in the margins: "Traveling with entities that should not coexist... cleanly"
ðŠķ Margin Notes (Appearing in the Book)
“Violation frequency exceeds predicted parameters.”
“Subject (Gauthak): Classification unstable. Ownership unresolved.”
“Subject (Zigga): No record found. Entry persists.”
“Subject (Farryn): Probability distortion detected.”
GRANTS FEAT: Auditor (see below)
ð Level 6: Version II — “That Shouldn’t Work… But It Does.”
Adaptive Ledger of Unresolved Processes
ð Description
- The rigid formatting of the tome has loosened.
- Sections rewrite themselves.
- Pages appear out of order.
- Some entries contradict earlier ones—yet both remain.
- The book no longer enforces law. It tracks outcomes.
ð§ What You Understand so far... The tome is being modified by:
- You (breaking expectations)
- Gauthak (a relic that refuses its assigned purpose)
- Farryn (luck behaving like intention)
- Zigga (events that occur without being recorded)
- Grisland (choice overriding divine expectation)
The book has determined: “Strict enforcement increases error. Adaptive interpretation required.”
GRANTS FEAT: Tome of Continuation (see below)
ðŠķ Margin Notes
- “Subject (Kayne): Acting outside assigned function. Results… effective.”
- “Gauthak: Refuses endpoint. System cannot resolve.”
- “Farryn: Outcomes occurring prior to probability.”
- “Zigga: Events accepted without record. System bypass confirmed.”
- “Grisland: Emotional attachment altering decision trees.”
ð Player Realization
- The book is no longer asking: “Is this allowed?”
- It is asking: “Did this work?”
The Immutable Record (conditions)
The Tome of Continuance is immune to nonmagical damage.
If it would be destroyed by magic, the spell is absorbed, producing no effect. The book becomes warm for a moment and records something new.
The book cannot be sold, gifted, or willingly relinquished. Only reassigned by Mechanus Directors.
This "edition" of the book replaces pervious editions and conditions.
Attunement Quirk
Occurs in Mechanus and by legal assignment, is then permanent and does not require an attunement slot. While attuned to That’s Illegal:
You have advantage on Intelligence (Investigation) and Arcane checks related to laws, contracts, planar rules, or loopholes.
You occasionally feel certain things are “wrong” before you can explain why.
Modrons, inevitables, and bureaucratic outsiders react to you with responsibility rather than hostility
You can open the book to consult its records at will and with no costs.
Auditor Feat
ð Legal Recall . You can perfectly recall contracts, agreements and events you have witnessed in the past. Gain advantage on: Investigation Arcana (legal/magical systems)
⚖️ Declare Violation (2/day) When a creature within 60 ft: breaks a rule, lies, violates an agreement. You can mark them as “In Violation”: They take +1d6 damage from the next source OR have disadvantage on their next roll.
ð§Đ Procedural Insight (1/day) Ask the tome: “What’s wrong here?” The DM provides: A contradiction, A flaw, A loophole. This tome will support Mechanus Law and Order.
Tome of Continuation Feat
ð Improvised Success (Reaction, 2/day) When you fail a roll: You may instead treat it as a success with a complication such as rolling a natural 1. DM introduces: a twist, a cost, or a strange side-effect or boon that produces a strangely chaotic outcome to explain the new result.
ðŪ Spell Capture (bonus action, limit 1)
When you witness a spell (within 100 feet) you want to learn or capture for later, make Arcana check. DC determined by 10 + Spells Level (if there is not a level DM will improvise the DC). On success, store a Fragment of the spell cast in the tome (limit: 1). Spells stored in this way may be copied into a wizard spell book (normal costs apply).
You may later use the Magic Action to: Cast it once as a ritual spell (casting time 10 minutes) or once as a warped version of the spell. Work with the DM for narrative ideas/uses. ie: Change the type of elemental damage of the spell or subtle conditions of the spells area.
You can remove the spell existing in the tome at will. You can only trap one spell at a time in the tome in this way.
⚖️ Liability Shift (2/day)
When you take damage: Reduce damage by half. The remaining damage transfers to another creature, an object, or the environment "over there" (with 30 ft of you).
Uses per level: Level 1 grants 1 use per day. Level 10 grants 2 uses per day. Level 20 grants 3 uses per day.
DM Note: I would have just added the actions to the item but dndbeyond doesn't let us do that yet unfortunately. Actionable items were added to feats for tracking and player uses on your current sheet.
