Hraefn, Guardian Angel of Choice
Hraefn Valkyrion, once known as the Broken Chooser, has undergone a profound metaphysical transformation following the events in Ysgard. Originally a Valkyrie—a celestial being designed to choose the worthy dead and deliver them to glory—Hraefn’s rigid purpose fractured when he encountered the "unwritten" nature of Zigga and her companions.
By asking to follow Zigga as her Guardian Angel, he has officially transitioned from a function-driven psychopomp to an Angel of Choice.
- Type: Valkyrie Anomaly / Proto-Angel (Mortal-Adjacent).
- Origin: Ysgard.
- Role: Witness and Guardian of the Unresolved.
- Was: Broken Chooser, Valkyrie CR 7
- Current companion: Angel of Choice, CR 4
Appearance
Hraefn stands as an imposing 7-foot-tall figure clad in weathered gold and ash-black plate armor. His most striking feature is his asymmetrical wings: his right wing is radiant and feathered, while his left wing is fragmented, darkened, and partially damaged —a permanent scar of his exposure to multiversal glitches.
His eyes reflect this internal duality: one is brilliant gold (representing celestial judgment), and the other is a dim, at times flickering violet (a "glitch eye" that vibrates with narrative instability).
Seeing the Unseen
"You died and I couldn't claim you... And I don't know why."
Behavior
Hraefn speaks with the measured, judicial certainty of a divine clerk; however, his current personality is defined by "pattern recognition failure". He no longer trusts the celestial laws that birthed him.
- The Weight of Choice: He no longer evaluates beings for "worthiness" alone. Instead, he prioritizes loyalty and ... preference
- Awkward Sincerity: His social interactions are "teenage-tier" in their tiptoeing flirtation; he is a being learning what it is to have a personal meaning for the first time. He finds comfort and beauty in Zigga’s chaos, which he views as "better" than the perfection of the Great Wheel... And he doesn't understand that...
Personality: From Judge to Witness
Previously, Hraefn spoke with the measured, judicial certainty of a divine clerk; however, his current personality is defined by "pattern recognition failure". He no longer trusts the celestial laws that birthed him.
Since Zigga accepted his loyalty, he has become awkward and protective, often "pausing too long" before speaking as he processes emotions without a systemic framework to guide them.
The Clue of the Shattered Compact
Hraefn’s "defect" stems from a specific failure in Acheron. During the War of the Shattered Compact, he was dispatched to claim the souls of fallen warriors like Gauthak, but found he was physically unable to do so. The souls were unresolvable—they did not rise to Ysgard or fall to Acheron, but instead looped in a state of "bad bookkeeping".
This failure to claim those souls is who originally informed the Last Tankard Monastery that certain souls required intervention rather than judgment. Hraefn carries the guilt of those unclaimable dead, which is why he is so intensely drawn to Zigga; he perceives her as a "Wronged Soul" who was once properly placed but was stolen away by negative space.
The image shows that Hraefn returned to the SC when LTM was there and continued to fail to claim worthy souls, taking it as a personal failure.
Current Motivations and Bonds
Hraefn now serves as Zigga's Witness, acting as a "stabilizer".
- Bond of Mutual Choice: He believes that because the planes reject Zigga, he must stand where nothing else can.
- Axiom-Torn Loyalty: While still extremely Lawful in his defense of his previous allies, he now actively defies Mechanus and Acheron retrieval squads, viewing their "optimal outcomes" as a form of degradation compared to the party's self-authored path.
“I was made to choose the worthy. I choose you.”
