Violin of Divergent Truths

🎻 The Violin of Divergent Truths

Wondrous item (instrument), very rare — requires attunement by a bard, sorcerer, warlock, or rogue with Performance proficiency

A lacquered black violin with strings made from strands of shimmering planar filament. Each string vibrates at slightly different realities. When played, the sound does not travel through air alone — it resonates through belief, memory, and cultural perspective.

The instrument was inspired by Zigga’s Ravnican noise theory:

Truth is not singular. It’s a chorus of contradictions.

🎼 Planar Performance

While playing the violin as part of a performance lasting at least 1 minute, the performer may roll a Performance check. The DC depends on the difficulty of the audience.

Audience DC

Friendly / familiar culture 12

Neutral crowd 15

Hostile / alien culture 18

On a success, the violin manifests a Truth Resonance — a vision or phenomenon reflecting how that audience perceives reality.

Roll on the table below.

🌌 d12 Truth Resonances

1 — Feywild Truth

The audience sees fleeting versions of themselves dancing freely in a brighter world.

Effect:

Creatures gain advantage on their next Charisma check within 10 minutes.

2 — Shadowfell Truth

Their shadows stretch unnaturally long, revealing hidden griefs and secrets.

Effect:

One creature in the audience must reveal a secret or personal truth aloud (Wisdom save negates).

3 — Mechanus Truth

Geometric clockwork patterns briefly overlay the world.

Effect:

The performer gains advantage on their next attack roll or spell save DC within the hour.

4 — Limbo Truth

Reality flickers like chaotic paint.

Effect:

Roll a d4:

1. Gravity reverses briefly

2. Colors invert

3. Everyone hears thoughts as whispers

4. Objects float gently

Lasts 1 round, harmless but disorienting.

5 — Elysium Truth

Warm golden light fills the performance space.

Effect:

Creatures regain 1d6 HP.

6 — Baator Truth

The sound becomes militaristic and commanding.

Effect:

The performer may cast Command (DC = spell save).

7 — Abyssal Truth

The music becomes discordant and ecstatic.

Effect:

One creature must succeed a Wisdom save or burst into manic laughter (as Tasha’s Hideous Laughter for 1 round).

8 — Astral Truth

The sound echoes infinitely.

Effect:

The performer briefly sees future possibilities and gains +2 to initiative for the next combat.

9 — Prime Truth

The audience sees flashes of ordinary lives they might have lived.

Effect:

All listeners gain Inspiration (DM discretion).

10 — Sigil Truth

The sound echoes through unseen doors.

Effect:

For 1 round, the performer may step through a doorway within 30 ft as if teleporting.

11 — Rakdos Truth

The music becomes wild carnival chaos.

Effect:

Confetti-like sparks erupt.

Creatures gain advantage on Performance or Intimidation checks for 1 hour.

12 — Multiversal Truth

All notes resonate simultaneously.

Effect:

Roll twice on this table and apply both effects.

🎶 Cultural Resonance Rule (Special Feature)

The DM may modify the resonance depending on who the audience is.

Example interpretations:

Audience Manifestation

Githzerai - visions of mental discipline vs chaos

Devils - rigid hierarchies forming in the air

Elves - echoes of ancient memories

Orcs - ancestral battle chants

Sigil street folk - glimpses of better lives

The violin doesn’t show objective truth.

It shows truth through perspective.

Wild Discord (1/day)

If the performer fails the Performance check by 5 or more, the violin creates a dangerous resonance:

• Roll on the table anyway

• But the effect becomes uncontrolled and chaotic

Example:

• Fey resonance summons actual mischievous sprites

• Shadow resonance summons hostile shadows

• Limbo resonance alters gravity unpredictably

Zigga calls this:

“When the music stops pretending.”

🎧 Appearance When Zigga Plays It

When Zigga performs with the violin:

• Notes appear as visible soundwaves

• Colors ripple through the crowd

• Listeners swear they hear multiple songs layered together

Some claim they hear their own story being played back to them.
