Ysgardian Rebirth

The Heroic Domains of Ysgard

Ysgard, also known as Gladsheim, is a plane defined by extreme environments and the pursuit of individual glory through unending conflict. Physically, the plane consists of three layers—Ysgard, Muspelheim, and Nidavellir—formed by massive continent-sized "earthbergs" that float like tightly packed asteroid belts. These chunks of land ground against each other at a noticeable pace, raising mountains and opening vast chasms. The undersides of these rivers of earth burn with radiant fire, providing a ruddy light to the layers below and causing the night sky to resemble rivers of lava. For the inhabitants, Ysgard is a place where glory is the only reward and death is merely a temporary setback in an eternal cycle of valor.

Glorium and the Dual Portals

The threshold to Ysgard in the Outlands is the gate-town of Glorium, a village of lodges and training fields nestled along the fertile slopes of an icy fjord. Unlike other gate-towns, Glorium possesses two planar gates:

  • The Maelstrom: A massive whirlpool a mile offshore that connects directly to the first layer of Ysgard. This watery gate reverses its tide twice daily, allowing living ships like the joke-loving giant raven vessel Courier to ferry travelers across the boundary.
  • The Worldroot: Hidden deep within the snow-capped mountains of Serpent's Rise, a secret entrance exists among the knotted roots of Yggdrasil, the World Ash. This gate is tended by the Worldroot Circle of giants and is defended by the treant Yggatha.

The Norse Pantheon and the Halls of Power

The plane is dominated by the Norse Pantheon, a rowdy yet organized group of deities who dwell in the realm of Asgard.

  • Odin All-Father: The stern and brave leader of the pantheon who observes the multiverse from his all-seeing throne, Hlidskialf. He rules from three halls: Valaskialf, Valhalla (the council chambers), and Gladsheim (the feasting hall).
  • Thor: The god of thunder who regularly leads valkyries into the Lower Planes to disrupt the Blood War.
  • Tyr: Known as the One-Handed or the Even-Handed, he is the god of justice and war. He is the only member of this pantheon widely worshiped in the Forgotten Realms and is responsible for ensuring only the most valiant enter Valhalla.
  • The Enemies: The pantheon faces eternal rivals in the Giant Pantheon, led by the twin kings Thrym (frost giants) and Surtr (fire giants).

The Law of Ysgardian Rebirth

The fundamental law of Ysgard is continuation through conflict. The plane possesses a unique supernatural property: anyone who dies heroically within the realm of Asgard—even a visitor—is resurrected the following morning. This creates a culture where "survival is not success—continuation is". In Ysgardian logic, a warrior does not fight because they are ordered to, but because they have chosen a meaning for their violence. This cycle is preserved by the Valkyries, who escort the bravest fallen to their afterlives as einheriar.

Causal Ties: Grisland and Gauthak

The player characters possess profound structural ties to this plane that the Great Wheel is currently failing to record properly:

  • Grisland Goldfeast: He is a Ysgardian celestial soul and a monk of the Last Tankard Tradition who descended to the mortal planes as a "descended vow". His mission was to witness those denied an honorable death in Acheron, and his "Knot of Returning Thunder" tattoo acts as a mnemonic seal that prevents the Wheel from recycling his memories during his current mission.
  • Gauthak: Though often treated as a machine-asset of Acheron, Gauthak was originally born of the giants of Ysgard before being "soul-stuffed" into an infernal-modron frame. His presence in the party acts as a catalyst for Farryn's awakening, as he instinctively identifies some of his companions as the gods and celestials from the Halls of Gladsheim.
