Session 8: Dolls 'n Shadows
Sylvania
The party regrouped within the boisterous glade of Sylvania, the gate-town to Arborea, where the air was thick with the scent of free food, ephemeral lights, and the hum of constant bartering. Gauthak, donning a teddy bear costume that lent a surprising boost to his persuasive charms, descended from the Great Tree to reunite with his companions as they navigated the whimsical streets. Amidst the festive atmosphere, Grisland shared vital intelligence gathered from a local tavern: children had recently witnessed a modron with a "rainbow wing" disappear in a sudden "poof" only days prior. This sighting confirmed that the unit they hunted, R04M, was not merely a rogue acting independently of the hive mind, but an entity whose very programming had been compromised by external magic or a powerful artifact.
As an experienced Auditor and native Cager, Kayne discussed the mechanical nature of these creatures with Grisland, noting that while modrons are typically restricted to singular, linear tasks, this specific unit was displaying an "anomaly of behavior" that suggested intentional tampering.
While the party debated their next move, Farryn remained perched in the boughs of the Great Tree, embracing the ancient wood until a message from Kayne—"Are you done yet? We need you now"—triggered a sudden, metaphysical shift. In a startling display of the multiversal glitch, Farryn transformed into a Whisper Bard without the catalyst of death, her hair changing color as reality failed to anchor her identity. Zigga was the first to notice the change, correctly identifying that the instability of the Great Wheel was now causing "Physical Fluctuations" even without the party being reduced to the dead-book.
Entanglements with Sootveil
They wander into a forested area and engage with some strangers while Zigga fiddled with her violin before recognizing her double Nyxara there.
The encounter took a turn with the arrival of Kerberos Shadowdusk, who appeared acutely altered by intoxicants.
Driven by a need for grounding, Zigga utilized the unique properties of the town to step into a waterfall, transitioning once more into the liquid geometry of the Mirrored Sanctuary to seek the council of Azrakiel.
Stepping from the shimmering cascade of a Sylvania waterfall, Zigga emerged from the liquid geometry of the Mirror Sanctuary to find the "Mutation" sect of the Sootveil Masquerade paralyzed by an existential crisis. The Ringleader, his face-paint a mask of incoherent dread, wailed that their scripts had been stolen—a theft that threatened to dissolve the troupe’s identity and leave them defenseless against the conceptual annihilation of the Caverns of Thought.
Despite his drug-induced haze, Kerberos provided a critical piece of the puzzle: he surrendered Zaga’s old script a manuscript retrieved from Yon. Farryn convinced Kerberos to hand these documents over to the Sootveil, effectively arming the troupe with "narrative armor" derived from Maryn’bl’s own occult research. (This was perhaps the closest that the party came to aiding the Sootveil or Kerberos, so convincing Kerberos to give this script was considered positive for the party on the back end.) Kerberos allied with the party to help the Sootveil with their performance.
Farryn, manifesting as a Whisper Bard, helped to provided the critical anchor of inspiration as the troupe improvised a new narrative using the scripts with Zigga, explaining things to Gauthak as best s they could. They would take charge of the performance, led by Zigga. Kerberos and Farryn being the bards, however the performance was led by hero and villain, Kerberos and Gauthak.
Seizing the opportunity for Sovereign Authorship, Zigga refused to let the performers fall into an identity void. Instead, she took up her mantle as the Composer and proposed an act of narrative vandalism: they would author an entirely new narrative that the system’s standard ledgers had not yet recorded. This improvisation turned the glade into a metaphysical battlefield where the party—including scripts from Yon surrendered by a drug-addled Kerberos Shadowdusk—vandalized the script of inevitability, ensuring that the troupe’s "narrative armor" was forged from collective choices rather than automated recurrence.
What once was:
As the performers prepared to take the stage, they realized that by providing the scripts, they weren't just saving a show—they were beginning to "vandalize the script of inevitability," choosing their own roles before the powers of the Caverns of Thought could decide them first.
The performance of the Sootveil Masquerade commenced not as a mere play, but as a metaphysical battlefield where the party narrowly avoided a "terrible massacre" that would have occurred had Zigga fully surrendered to her darker Rakdos instincts. Kerberos embellishes throughout as his bardic training, while further infuriating Gauthak.
What happened:
In the aftermath of the show, a chilling anomaly was confirmed: despite her physical presence, Zigga cast no reflection in the waters of Sylvania. When questioned by the party, she remained defiant, reminding them that they had already witnessed her walk through mirrors as if they were nothing more than negative space.
Scissors of Shadow Snipping
The tension of identity reached a breaking point when Farryn utilized her magical scissors to snip Zigga's shadow. Stepping into the severed silhouette, Farryn transformed to look exactly like the Zigga (current form as orc). Farryns magic was inadvertently redirected a lingering curse. The reflection Nyxara, who had long haunted the edges of Zigga’s psyche, was suddenly and violently transformed into a featureless wooden doll, leaving the drug-addled Kerberos Shadowdusk clutching a silent toy where a predatory entity once stood. Zigga's shadow was returned by Farryn.
Revelations
During a period of much-needed rest, Grisland entered a deep meditation, his faith recognizing Farryn not just as an ally, but as a "willing actor" playing a role on the ground floor of a much larger game. He perceived her as a ripening aspect of a neutral deity, one whose very presence emanated a luck so potent it could trigger glitches without the catalyst of death. Simultaneously, Farryn entered an elven trance that pulled her back to the night at Fortune’s Wheel. She realized she had been an uninvited variable that night, stalking Kayne while he was being targeted by casino goons and charmed by Nyxara. As she drifted back to consciousness, the only sound she heard was the grinding, stressed hum of gears within Gauthak’s chest, signaling that his internal engine was in desperate need of maintenance.
NEW MEMORY + INFO FROM CASINO: What Kayne and Bajie overheard at the casino a few days ago... (4mins)
An echo of what-was Zigga's lonely imaginary friend, a reflection of life of evil lived in another world, has now resolved in an instant and willing act of fortune itself. What... did we learn?
Escalated Choices
Morning brought a sudden escalation as Gauthak glitched into a lean, intensely "cut" physical form, his body hissing with steam as the rain touched his overheated skin. Declaring himself the "Jack-Wacker," the Goliath found his perceptions suddenly sharpening as he began to sense "Acheron-code" and root-step vibrations guiding him toward an approaching threat. A messenger soon arrived with an urgent warning: "Big iron guys" had entered the town looking for non-locals. The party was forced into a brutal confrontation with the Iron Pursuit, facing a massive armored tank and specialized hunters who utilized spell-trapping nets to pin down their arcane allies. After a grueling struggle that saw several pursuers hurled into a yawning chasm, the party stood victorious. However, the victory was tempered by a startling proposition from the captive chain-wielder Tesk, who offered to finally remove the mechanical core from Gauthak’s chest.
