In the soot-stained streets of Sigil’s Lower Ward, where the air tastes of sulfur and hot iron, sits A’kin’s Emporium of Practical Impossibilities. The proprietor, A’kin, is a greater yugoloth of the arcanaloth class, though he presents a demeanor far removed from the standard predatory instincts of his kind. He resembles a tall, broad-shouldered humanoid with sandy brown fur, clawed hands, and the head of a fanged jackal. A distinctive black stripe of fur partially encircles his golden eyes like a bandit’s mask, and he typically wears robes speckled with teal, gold, and black to hide his fiendish features. Despite his prominent fangs, A’kin is known throughout the Cage as the "Friendly Fiend," greeting every customer with an enthusiastic grin and the raspy assurance, "Come in, come in! I won’t bite".

A’kin’s business model is as curious as his disposition; he is famous for funding long-shot quests because the "story value alone is worth it" and for giving away small magical trinkets for free to browsers. His shop contains hundreds of bins filled with enchanted dice, hypnotic tops, and gadgets, alongside high-tier items like magical armor and longswords. He possesses an uncanny, supernatural knowledge of his clientele, often surprising customers by asking about their family members by name or inquiring about specific private endeavors. While he is unfailingly honest in a "dangerous way," A’kin remains intensely evasive about his own past, answering direct questions with empty, polite platitudes. This has birthed numerous rumors: some claim he is a Blood War spy for the Dark Eight, others believe he is an exile from Gehenna, and a few swear he spends his nights screaming and throwing himself against his walls to vent suppressed evil

The Gauthak Investment: Profiting from the "Unwritten"

A’kin’s intense interest in Gauthak Gathakanathai stems from their shared history and a "perfect question" the Goliath once asked him: "What is the most impressive thing a person can do? No tricks". A’kin realized Gauthak was a unique statistical anomaly—a being immune to rhetoric who measures worth only in deeds. To A’kin, Gauthak is "underlogged" by the multiverse, and he treats the barbarian as a "field test for reality"

A’kin profits from Gauthak through "Story Value" and the acquisition of anomalous data. By funding and documenting Gauthak’s ridiculous "Cheevo List"—which includes feats like winning a staring contest with a Medusa or moving an Immovable Rod through sheer intention—A’kin collects proof that "the world is lying again". While Gauthak gains recognition, A’kin retains the "Receipt of Deeds," a transactional record that functions as Exhibit A in the Sigil Courts. This receipt serves as a crystallized asset proving Gauthak’s Anomalous Autonomy, effectively transitioning him from a manufactured "Asset" to a "Person"

A’kin’s relationship with Shemeshka the Marauder is one of bitter rivalry and mutual enmity. While both are arcanaloths, they operate on opposite philosophical poles: Shemeshka calculates and monetizes chaos, while A’kin believes in self-actualization through commerce. A’kin was notably removed from the Merkhant Guild (also spelled Merkant Guild) because his peers—including Shemeshka—deemed him "too kind," a rejection that left him profoundly upset.

Today, A’kin takes "great delight in fouling up Shemeshka’s schemes" whenever possible, using his resources to protect the very variables she seeks to control. Shemeshka’s hatred for him is so potent that she has reportedly killed individuals for merely mentioning A’kin’s name in her presence. By guiding the party and validating Gauthak’s autonomy, A’kin is not merely being "friendly"—he is bankrupting Shemeshka’s war-contract investments and proving that "the House" does not always collect.
