Iggwilv the Archfey

DnD Cannon

Iggwilv, originally known as Natasha "the Dark" and later as the mage Tasha, is one of the most powerful and feared archmages in the history of Oerth. Born on the world of Oerth, she was the adoptive daughter of the legendary arch-hag Baba Yaga, from whom she first learned the dark intricacies of magic and the secrets of the multiverse. As a young woman, she served as an apprentice to the eccentric archmage Zagig Yragerne in the Free City of Greyhawk and was a prominent member of the Company of Seven. During this tenure, she and Zagig successfully summoned and bound the demon lord Fraz-Urb’luu beneath Castle Greyhawk, an achievement that allowed her to extract invaluable secrets regarding demonic hierarchies.

Seeking absolute power, Iggwilv eventually betrayed her mentor, absconding with his greatest arcane treasures, including the Tome of Zyx. She fled to the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth, where she refined her research into the Abyss and authored her seminal work, the six-volume Demonomicon of Iggwilv. Around 481 CY, she used her expanded knowledge to conquer the nation of Perrenland, ruling it as a "Witch Queen" whose name is still used a century later to frighten disobedient children. During her reign, she performed her most infamous feat of demonology: the summoning and binding of the Dark Prince Graz’zt, whom she forced to serve as her consort and advisor.

The union between the Witch Queen and the Dark Prince produced the vile demigod Iuz, also known as "The Old One," who would go on to terrorize the Flanaess for centuries. Iggwilv’s era of dominance in Perrenland ultimately ended in 491 CY during a disastrous ritual where her control over Graz’zt faltered, leading to a titanic battle that shook the Yatil Mountains. Though Graz’zt was banished back to the Abyss for a century, Iggwilv was left broken and weakened, losing the majority of her artifacts and her empire. She is also the mother of the vampire Drelnza, who was eventually destroyed while guarding her mother’s treasures in the Lost Caverns.

In the following centuries, Iggwilv remained a recurring threat to the peace of Oerth, frequently clashing with the Circle of Eight. She once attempted to invade the world using the moon Luna as a staging ground and another time led an army of fiends into the world, though she was defeated on both occasions. Historically, she is noted for having two distinct forms: that of a beautiful, alabaster-skinned woman with flowing black hair, and that of a hideous, bald old crone. Her legacy is defined by her unmatched knowledge of the Abyss and her ambition to dominate its lords, remaining an enduring symbol of the dark heights a mortal archmage can achieve.

The Palace and the Horn

The journey reached its climax within the Palace of Heart’s Desire, where the party discovered the ruling archfey Zybilna frozen in temporal stasis. Zaga’s long-term research had correctly identified Zybilna as a mask for the archmage Iggwilv. To break the stasis and resolve the crisis, the party used a unicorn horn to wake her from her magical dream.

The Immediate Loss: The Memory Edit

The moment Iggwilv awoke, she did not offer gratitude; instead, she asserted her dominance. Recognizing Zaga as a "handler" she had seeded long ago for divine contingencies, Iggwilv struck her with a powerful Modify Memory spell.

In a single, surgical instant, Iggwilv edited Zaga’s narrative, rendering her cognitively unable to comprehend the name "Iggwilv" or the fanatical devotion she once held for her master. While this was intended to ensure Zaga remained a compliant "Little Dividend" for the Witch Queen's future schemes, the act had an unintended consequence: it released Zaga from her generational servitude and her fanatical idolization.

Tip: See Zaga's page for the non-modified memory scene...
*clear throat* This is the telling as Iggwilv would have it be seen.

Emancipation and Atonement

Back in Sigil, the "new" Zaga found herself untethered from her former architect's will. Because she can no longer even understand the name of her former master, she has pivoted her existence entirely toward Balance and secret atonement. She now worships Boccob exclusively, utilizing her mastery of the Black Scrolls of Ahm to manage the multiverse’s "bad bookkeeping" and repair the damage caused by her former selves.

By modifying Zaga’s memory, Iggwilv inadvertently created a sovereign actor who now stands as the hidden axis of the party's quest to fix the Great Wheel, fundamentally changing the trajectory of Zaga's fate from a slave of prophecy to an independent author of her own resolution.
