Zagnibs, or in the hive of sigilain day to day life as Old Grin

Zagnibs refers to the aspect of Old Grin that dominated the vessel in Zaga's early life.

Maryn'bl Zagnibs Savage One song as a strategic system (lyrics available in description of vid on YT):

Zagnibs, Called Old Grin

There are names that survive because they are feared. There are names that survive because they are worshiped. And then there are names that survive because they simply refuse to die.

Zagnibs belongs to the last category.

The oldest surviving references to the entity called Zagnibs are inconsistent almost to the point of absurdity. Some ancient records describe a scavenger devil drifting through collapsing war markets in Acheron, bargaining over shattered siege relics while iron cubes burned around him. Others describe a mortal mercenary whose company survived too many impossible campaigns and returned with a commander who no longer seemed entirely singular.

DC 25 Demonic History/Arcana: A few sealed fragments hidden in the deeper vaults of Sigil suggest something even stranger: that “Nibs” was itself born due to the victim of a possession long before the identity ever crossed paths with the soul of Zaga Thorneveil.

No scholar has ever been able to conclusively prove which version came first.

What historians can agree upon is that the continuity known as Zagnibs learned very early that survival depended upon usefulness. Not conquest. Not domination. Usefulness.

Where fiends destroyed kingdoms, Zagnibs sold supply lines to both sides. Where warlords demanded loyalty, Nibs learned neutrality. During the brutal contract wars of Acheron, the continuity became deeply embedded within mercenary economies, transport routes, salvage systems, and the strange unspoken agreements that allow endless war to continue functioning. Armies changed banners. Generals vanished. Entire cubes fell burning into planar voids. Somehow, Nibs remained.

Over centuries, the identity evolved. The fragmented and unstable continuity associated with Nibs slowly hardened into something more coherent, more controlled, and infinitely more dangerous. That later identity would eventually become known across portions of the Astral Sea as Zagnibs.

By then, the thing that frightened people was no longer violence. It was patience.

Sometimes showing as a controlled tiefling occultist, while fully capable of retaining the form and identiy of Zagnibs. Zagnibs became known as a broker of fleets, spelljamming helms, impossible cargoes, and dangerous negotiations. He built influence the way ancient liches build tombs: carefully, slowly, and with the assumption that centuries were merely accounting periods. Among the Z-Merchant Networks, his reputation became almost legendary. Contracts signed through Zagnibs were honored. Debts were remembered. Trade routes remained stable even during planar unrest. Entire astral ports quietly adjusted their economies around his movements without admitting they had done so.

And yet, despite the rumors, the demonic whispers, and the terrifying persistence of the continuity itself, Maryn'bl was not known as a tyrant.

He was known as restrained. That restraint did not emerge naturally.

Submission

Nearly two thousand years ago, during events still hidden behind fragmented records and deliberately sealed histories, the continuity encountered Zaga Thorneveil in his consciousness. Unlike prior hosts, vessels, or identities absorbed into the chain before her, Zaga did not disappear beneath the possession. She resisted. Not briefly. Not symbolically. Completely.

For the first time in perhaps millennia, the continuity met a will capable of forcing compromise.

The result was catastrophic at first. The shared existence nearly destroyed them both. Memories bled together. Instincts merged. Emotional boundaries collapsed. The demonic survival logic that had carried Nibs through wars and planar catastrophes collided with the deeply human emotional architecture of Zaga Thorneveil. Neither emerged unchanged.

But over time, something unprecedented occurred. Zagnibs lost control.

Not through imprisonment. Not through exorcism. Through exhaustion, adaptation, and eventually... choice.

The continuity realized that absolute domination no longer worked. The more he attempted to overwrite Zaga, the more unstable the shared existence became. So instead, slowly and reluctantly, Maryn'bl Zagnibs began to learn restraint from the one person who refused to surrender herself to him.

That change altered everything.

Maryn'bl's Rule

The being who emerged from the following centuries was no longer the same entity that once drifted through the contract wars of Acheron. He remained dangerous. Ancient. Capable of terrible things. But he also became capable of patience without predation, negotiation without manipulation, and eventually even forms of loyalty that older versions of the continuity would likely have considered weaknesses.

It was during this long stabilization period that the identity of Maryn'bl Zagnibs became fully established, especially in Sigil. Not merely an alias, but a functioning social self. A negotiator. A commander. A merchant prince. A continuity stable enough to participate in civilization rather than merely survive beside it.

Today, across portions of the Astral and the planes beyond, Maryn'bl Zagnibs is regarded as one of the great independent trade powers of the age. They command fleet movements tied to the industrial depths of the Underveil, oversees military procurement systems older than some kingdoms, and maintains influence across enough trade corridors that many powers quietly depend upon him while publicly pretending they do not.

In Sigil, however, very few know any of this.

There, in the Hive, some only know a strange old figure called "Old Grin". A quiet presence. A rumor with too many faces. An unsettling creature who somehow never quite becomes the monster everyone expects him to be.

Most dismiss the stories. A few know better.

And buried in the oldest sealed archives of Sigil are records suggesting the most terrifying possibility of all: that after all these centuries, after all the corruption, war, survival, transformation, and compromise…

Maryn'bl Zagnibs may no longer know where the original self ended either.
