Kayne Mountainstar-Vlathis

Kayne’s Background: The Auditor of Mechanus

Kayne Mountainstar was raised in the shadow of rigid, multiversal order. His life was defined by the presence of his father, Director A. P. Valthis, a high-ranking human official in the Fortress of Disciplined Enlightenment on the plane of Mechanus. Following the disappearance of Kayne’s mother from his life, his father requested a formal reassignment to the clockwork heart of Law, changing his last name to "Valthis" to distance his career from the family's past. He arranged his son to marry to D-N Smithsdotter.

To keep Kayne "useful" within the system while ensuring he remained in a safe exile, the Director maneuvered Kayne into a prestigious position in the City of Doors. Through connections at the Hall of Records, Kayne was established as a Civic Planar Irregularities Auditor. He was assigned an apartment and tasked with investigating edge cases where lawful systems contradicted each other, most notably Case REC-Δ-7743, which tracked the illegal arrival of anomalous entities in Sigil.

The Two Kaynes: Record vs. Choice

"Before Kayne": The Instrument of Law

Prior to the multiversal glitch, Kayne was a bureaucratically lethal wizard and a "lawful boy" who lived as a servant to the Great Machine. He was defined by a strict attention to detail and the heavy weight of his father’s professional expectations. His primary identity was that of the Record; he audited soul-debts, tracked infractions, and viewed reality as a series of ledgers that needed to balance to zero. He was an "Authorized Interpreter" of the system who followed procedure without emotion, even when auditing those he found personally intriguing.

"After Glitches": The Liberated Spirit

When the glitch stripped Kayne of his memories and dumped him in the Mortuary, it performed a subconscious act of liberation. This "New Kayne" emerged not as a wizard of law, but as a flirtatious druidic spirit—a direct rebellion against his former rigid self. Without the chains of Mechanus or the servitude to his father’s lineage, he enjoyed a rare freedom. He traded the "syntax of power" for "growth without permission," approaching the multiverse with the disarming warmth of a traveler who had no reason to be cynical or cold.

The Unraveling: A Message to the Player

Kayne, over the last 3 to 4 days, the quiet freedom you’ve enjoyed has begun to fray. The Regulator device you opened in the Lower Ward weeks ago was not just a trinket; it was a stabilizer that has now begun to discharge its stored data directly into your psyche.

Between your arrival back to the party in the Outlands and your stay in the Lady’s Ward, the "Standard Ledger" of your past has begun to demand an audit. Magic from the device has unraveled in your dreams, flooding your mind with the sharp, cold memories of who you used to be: the Auditor, the son of the Director, and the man who once knew far too much about the "darks" of Sigil.

You have spent these last few days sequestered in a luxurious suite at the Fortune’s Wheel casino. It has likely been a time of profound frustration and internal upset as you struggle to reconcile the carefree druid you’ve become with the rigid wizard you once were. However, you haven't been entirely alone in your distress. The house has provided impeccable room service and fine food to keep you comfortable. More importantly, you have found solace in the company of friends—most notably the "bathhouse babe" you met before entering the casino, who has remained by your side to offer comfort while the gears of your memory slowly grind back into place.

Liberating the Chains of Mechanus

Many decades ago Maryn'bl suspected the chains of servitude may extend from Able to Kayne, and found direct evidence of it. The tome "That's Illegal" was taken from her which effectively proved her theory; their children were a continuation of a cycle that needed breaking.

Recently Kayne has passed all the tests he needed to for her to begin the unraveling of deeper meanings. He also has the legal and professional standings needed to progress in meaningful ways.

Utilizing the power of the bind itself she can assist Kayne in redirecting it but only when Kayne relates clearly to a divine god willing to work with him directly. She does not possess the knowledge of them and therefore makes no assumptions. Building trust in a closer proximity than they've ever had will only make it possible not promised.

However she has noticed how unlucky the poor fellow seems to be in most cases...
