The King of the Cross-Trade: A Dossier on Shemeshka the Marauder

As you step beyond the violet haze of Sigil and into the surreal sprawl of the Outlands, one shadow looms larger than the Spire itself: Shemeshka the Marauder. Known throughout the Cage as the "King of the Cross-Trade," she is the poised, predatory heart of Sigil’s information economy.

To understand Shemeshka, one must first understand the yugoloths. Native to the Lower Planes of Gehenna and the Gray Waste, yugoloths are the ultimate mercenaries of the multiverse—neutral evil entities who view the eternal Blood War not as a crusade, but as a market. Shemeshka is an arcanaloth, a hyper-intelligent class of yugoloth that resembles a humanoid with the head of a fanged jackal—though Shemeshka herself prefers the groomed, coppery fur and streaks of a fox from Arcadia. Arcanaloths are the record-keepers and contract-makers of their kind, possessing a Contractual Obsession that makes them masters of the "gray space" between planar law and chaos.

Shemeshka is also known as the King of the Crossroads.

The Empire of Fortune

Shemeshka’s profession is power, and her currency is secrets. In Sigil, she is a fixed point of influence, owning the opulent Fortune’s Wheel casino in the Lady’s Ward, a palace in the Clerk’s Ward, and maintaining substantial indirect ownership of the Hall of Coin.

Within the velvet-lined walls of Fortune’s Wheel, Shemeshka operates as a "portfolio manager of catastrophe". She is rarely seen in common areas, preferring to hold court in private lounges or her secret Abyssal retreat, the House of Liars. Her primary tool of control is the House Ledger, a probability accounting instrument she uses to track who "owes reality what".

  • The Modron Experiment: Shemeshka views the multiverse as a transactional chessboard. She hijacked the modron R04M (Delta-Nine), not because he was an accountant, but because he is a Logos-Vector—a living hard drive. She used him as a Living Ledger Cache to store illegal war-contracts and transaction records she wanted to keep off the official Sigil books.
  • Player Question: If R04M is a "clerical error," why is Shemeshka so desperate to retrieve the data he’s "leaking" across the Outlands?

The Platinum Rooms and the War Economy

Hidden within the casino are the Platinum Rooms, a demiplanar hub where interplanar high-rollers wager ancient artifacts and the fates of worlds.

  • The War-Room of Nonfinalities: This higher-dimensional observatory once overlooked the battlefields of the Shattered Compact in Acheron. Here, Shemeshka profited by wagering on "non-outcomes" and "delayed resolutions," monetizing the suffering of 10,000 "machine-men" stolen from Ysgard.
  • The Discount Gallery: Following the escape of the goliath war-relics, this strategy lab has collapsed into the Discount Gallery. It is now an unprofitable stalemate of skeletons vs. demons.
  • Player Question: Did Shemeshka send you into the Outlands to find a modron, or to ensure that her "assets"—specifically Gauthak—are recaptured by the Iron Pursuit she is currently funding?

The Spies and the Servitude

Shemeshka’s web of spies is legendary, and she commands them with a "quick, guillotinelike temper".

  • Maryn’bl Zagnibs: Hired years ago as the Debt & Contracts Manager, Shemeshka views Maryn'bl as a "well-oiled machine" and her "Little Dividend"—a controlled liability that always pays out. She assumes Maryn’bl is an emotionally detached employee, with the exception of her assumed new romantic partner...
  • Kerberos Shadowdusk: Recently hired to manage the Discount Gallery, Kerberos serves as Shemeshka’s secret eyes outside of the House. She pays him to monitor the remaining war relics with the War Rooms and maintain control over the Legion Engine (VV) until the hired Iron Pursuit can return the rest of the 10,000 souls to Acheron.
    • Privately the King and Iggwilv conspire to hire Kerberos to spy on Maryn'bl privately and ensure they have a trusted someone to watch over the assets. Wealth is piling in his favor.

The Glitch and the Data Drift

Shemeshka’s greatest concern is "Data Drift"—the physical manifestation of the Great Wheel failing to close its books. She does not wish to fix the Wheel's malfunction; she wishes to monetize it.

However, her narrative of control is being frayed by two "Violation Flags":

  1. The Balance Rippler (Farryn): A ripening divine presence whose unstable causal ripples break Shemeshka’s predictive models.
  2. The Uncounted Step (Zigga): An anomaly who exists as "causal noise" the universe refuses to index. Zigga’s presence causes Shemeshka’s ledgers to miscount, creating errors that even an arcanaloth cannot price.

Personality and Profile

Shemeshka is dignified, vain, and volatile. She treats allies and enemies alike: as disposable pawns on a board she intends to own. She fears only one thing: an end she cannot invoice.

Quotes from the Marauder:

  • "Where’s the center of the multiverse? Me. I’m the center of the multiverse. And not because of some philosophical brainteaser. Because I’m making it so."
  • "Modrons can’t help but correct things. Even when they don’t understand them. It will circle anomalies like a moth... seeking light."
  • "I didn't kill you. I didn't save you. I just made sure you weren't lost to the system."

Player Question: As you walk the Outlands, are you correcting a multiversal glitch, or are you simply "bad bookkeeping" that the House is waiting to collect?
